Stone Polishing and Re-cutting
Any fine gemstone or diamond can be re-cut. Here are some reasons to consider re-cutting or polishing a stone:
- A minor chip on the girdle can be polished out or the stone turned to place the chip under a prong or mounting.
- A chip which enters the crown or pavilion areas of the stone may require the stone to be re-cut.
- A cleave into the stone could possibly be filled to secure the integrity of the stone, keep the area invisible to the naked eye and prevent the owner from having to replace the stone.
- Abrasions on the facets of colored stones can usually be polished out.
Re-cutting of any stone will usually change the weight and size dependent upon the size of inclusion or chip to be eliminated. If a stone is filled to remove an unsightly inclusion, the value of the stone will not be increased. |
